Belt filter presses are producing mechanical pressure on the slurry by sandwiching the sludge between two monofilament woven synthetic fabric which squeezes the water out of the sludge. Those woven synthetic fabric within these belt filter presses are on high tension and follow a specific path along various rolls with a decreasing size of diameter. When the woven synthetic fabric passes the final pair rollers at the end of its path, then the polyester filter belts are getting separated where the filter cake (result of the pressed sludge) is scraped off where it ends up in a receiving container.

The belt filter press can be divided into three main areas:
The gravity dewater area where the sludge is draining freely from water by means of gravity on a porous polyester filter belts
The wedge area where the remaining slurry is getting together by means of the rollers and polyester filter belts
The pressure area where medium to high pressure is applied on the sludge in order to drain the solids intensively

In other words, this filtration process is all about draining by pressing sludge between polyester filter belts in order to dewater the sludge for further processing.
