Paper machine clothing is a vital part of the papermaking process. At the wet-end, a forming fabric both conveys the web from the head box to the press section and, simultaneously, acts as a filter. The pursuit of higher machine speeds, improvements in paper quality and greater machine efficiency will place a greater reliance on fabric technology to ensure that mill projects are successful."

The trend toward bigger, faster, more efficient paper machines has led to a number of new developments in the forming fabrics arena. The average width of forming fabrics in new paper machines has increased significantly. In some grades, such as UWC (uncoated woodcontaining), the width of the forming section has doubled in less than 20 years.

The decrease in average basis weight (for newsprint, for instance, this has fallen from 48.8 g/m2 in the 1980s to 45 g/m2 today) and the growing use of wastepaper and deinked pulp are other paper manufacturing trends that place additional demands on forming fabrics. Faster machines also create new challenges for fabrics suppliers. High machine speed requires improvement in forming fabric dimensional stability and optimization of drainage properties.
