Belt filter presses are producing mechanical pressure on the slurry by sandwiching the sludge between two monofilamentfilter belt screen which squeezes the water out of the sludge. Those woven filter belt screen within these belt filter presses are on high tension and follow a specific path along various rolls with a decreasing size of diameter. When the woven filter belt screen passes the final pair rollers at the end of its path, then the filter belts are getting separated where the filter cake (result of the pressed sludge) is scraped off where it ends up in a receiving container.

The belt filter press can basically be divided into three main areas:

1. The gravity dewater area where the sludge is draining freely from water by means of gravity on a porous filter cloth belt/woven synthetic fabric
2. The wedge area where the remaining slurry is getting together by means of the rollers and filter cloth
3. The pressure area where medium to high pressure is applied on the sludge in order to drain the solids intensively

In other words, this filtration process is all about draining by pressing sludge between wire cloth belts in order to dewater the sludge for further processing.
